Otto, Pseudonym Leo F. Kọtta, Schriftsteller, * Metz 29. 10. 1880, ✝ Baden-Baden 10. 11. 1963; war anfangs von Impressionismus und Expressionismus beeinflusst. Der fünfteilige Entwicklungsroman »Ruland« trägt zum Teil autobiographische Züge: »Freitagskind« (1913, 1928 unter dem Titel »Eine Kindheit«), »Ruland« (1922), »Der gute Weg« (1924), »Villa U.S.A.« (1926), »Freund aller Welt« (1928). Aus seinem umfangreichen Werk ragen v. a. die Erziehungs- und Bildungsromane heraus: »Badische Chronik« (1934/35, 2 Bände, 1952 in einem Band. unter dem Titel »Die Monthivermädchen«), »Fortunat« (1946, 2 Bände) mit der Fortsetzung »Ein Mann von Welt« (1947, 2 Bände), »Die Sanduhr« (1950). Der konservativen Form dieser Werke steht ihre moderne Sprache gegenüber; der Erzählstil ist klar und sachlich. In Flakes Vorliebe für Themen aus dem Bereich deutsch-französischer Beziehungen und Gegensätze wird sein Streben nach einem neuen geistig-politischen Verhältnis zwischen den beiden Völkern deutlich. Flake war auch Übersetzer (Stendhal, H. de Balzac) und verfasste Arbeiten u. a. über französische Literatur; auch historische Werke, Dramen, Märchen, Essays und philosophische Schriften. In den Letzteren vertrat Flake das »neuantike« Ideal eines die individuelle Freiheit achtenden, aber auf Klarheit und Ordnung dringenden Lebens.
